The National Commission for Higher Education (CNES) was set up by executive order No. 100/12 of 10 January 2008 of creation, organization and operating the National Commission for Higher Education in Burundi.  Its operation was made possible by Executive Order No. 100/5 of 5 January 2011 appointing its members.

It has evolved in its organization under the tutelage of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (headed by Dr. Engineer Saidi KIBEYA, later replaced by Dr. Julien NIMUBONA), now called "Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Scientific Research " whose control is assured by Dr. Janvière NDIRAHISHA.

From the legal point of view, CNES is governed by Law No. 1/22 of 30 December reorganizing higher education in Burundi.

Some important dates:

  • January 2008: Decree n° 100/12 of January 10, 2008 on the creation, organization and functioning of the National Commission in Burundi.
  • January 2011: Decree No. 100/05 of January 5, 2011 appointing members of CNES.
  • February 25, 2011: Installation and launch of CNES work by HE 2nd Vice-President of the Republic.
  • December 2011: promulgation of the Law n ° 1/22 of December 30, 2011 on the reorganization of the higher education in Burundi.
  • May 30 and 31   2012: validation workshop of twelve draft decrees and ordinances for the application of Law n° 1/22 of December 30, 2011 organized by CNES under the patronage of the Ministry in charge of higher education.
  • November 2014: Decree n° 100/258 of 14 November 2014 reorganizing and running CNES.
